Biography

Dr. Aubrey Tucker is one of those rare musicians who has distinguished himself as a jazz, classical and pop trombonist, composer and arranger, conductor and band leader, businessman and educator.

As a jazz trombonist and arranger, Aubrey has toured America and the world with the great big bands of Woody Herman, Si Zentner and Illinois Jacquet, among others. In the Houston, Texas area, in addition to his own Aubrey Tucker Band, Aubrey has been featured with with the Ed Gerlach, Buddy Brock and Ronnie Renfrow big bands, and with many combos, including Jimmy Ford and Arnette Cobb, and for several years with the Buddy Kirk Band.

In nearly a decade as an arranger and trombonist in Las Vegas, Aubrey worked with virtually every major stage star, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, and Tony Bennett. His arrangements have been featured in numerous network television shows and major motion pictures. Aubrey led his own big band in Las Vegas, and was five times winner of the Las Vegas Entertainment Awards as a member of the Johnny Haig Orchestra.

Aubrey Tucker has an extensive background as a classical trombonist, including appearances with the Houston Symphony, Opera, and Ballet orchestras, and touring with the American Pops Orchestra. He was a finalist as trombone soloist in the International Music Competition in Munich, Germany. He also has conducted extensively. He has won critical acclaim as a classical composer. His earned degrees are from the University of Houston Moores School of Music (BM, Trombone Performance) and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music (MM, Music Theory and DMA, Music Composition).

As an educator, Dr. Tucker founded what is now known as the Cougar Brass and Cougar Dolls at the University of Houston and developed the jazz studies program there beginning in 1972. Because of Aubrey's close association with Woody Herman, Woody's archives and manuscripts were loaned to the University for more than a decade.

In 1985, Dr. Tucker founded the Commercial Music Department at Houston Community College- programs which included audio, video, jazz, pop, music business, in conjunction with traditional academic music studies. He continues there today as Chair of Fine Arts, Speech and Commercial Music and Professor of Trombone, Arranging and Composition, Conducting and Music Business.
