Dr. Joanne Chiehwen Lai Hsu (賴潔文) was born in Hong Kong, but grew up in Taiwan, an island of natural beauty and rich culture . After receiving her B. S. Degree from National Taiwan University, she left home for the first time and went to the Ohio State University for graduate studies in Columbus, Ohio in 1976. There, she met some nice people (including her husband) to help her adapt to the new country. After she received her M. A. and Ph. D. degrees in psychology (experimental and quantitative areas), she struggled about what she wanted to do with her work in 1980s while raising two young daughters. When she started teaching at HCC Northwest College in 1990, she had a strong sense of certainty that it was a right place for her. It still is. She finds great joy and meaning from working with students and faculty to create learning opportunities to expand minds. One of her current academic interests is in the area of global psychology, especially Taiwan indigenized psychology research. She is working to develop and update web resources on global and cross-cultural psychology (see link below) and to collaborate with scholars in Taiwan. Through these efforts, she hopes to facilitate the internationalization of psychology curriculum, to serve as a "bridge" to introduce more Taiwan indigenized psychology research to the U. S., and to help students gain a global perspective.
